The conversation between the Canyons School Board Members, was very interesting at last weeks School Board Meeting. They were discussing the proposed Code of Conduct. I found it very insightful that some Board Members seem to not care about Due Process, Freedom of Speech and Association, and following the laws of the State of Utah. I have always been of the understanding, that elected officials in the United States should value these hallmarks of our political system. I have always believed in good open government and not using intimidation and threats to garner political power. It might be wise to elect people to the School Board who want to conduct business in the light and obey the laws of the State of Utah.

This letter in the Desert News today spells out some major concerns about the proposed Code of Ethics in the Canyons School District. It is important the the Canyons School Board passes a Code of Ethics that is moral and tied to State Law. The proposed policy seems to be more of a control and intimidation document, rather than a good governance policy. I hope the Board will delay implementing this Ethics Policy until the new School Board is seated in January. It is so important to elect three new independent Board Members this November.

This situation is very interesting. This Superintendent is now making more than the State Superintendent. He makes thousands more than the Superintendent of the two biggest school districts. These two districts have almost forty thousand more students. Most of the superintendents in the other districts have their pay tied to the raises given to the teachers. Why did the Canyons School Board make the decision to give such a large raise?

I met with the Cottonwood Heights Voters Committee last week.  I just received word today that they have endorsed me.  I appreciate their support.   Here is an excerpt of a letter that they sent out to their members.

Dear CHVoters,

Last week we met with the all of the Primary Candidates for School Board and the Utah Senate (only the Democrats are having a primary).  Prior to the general election we will meet with all the candidates(Republicans and Democrats) and go through this process again.  Here are the impressions that we came away with last week:

SCHOOL BOARD: WE ENDORSE CLAY PEARCE

There is a need within the Canyons School District to increase open conversation between the board, teachers, and parents.  The consensus from all the candidates was that the board needed to take charge of the District and the Superintendent needed to follow the board’s lead.  Currently the Superintendent is leading and directing the board.

They all thought that the district was doing many things well but all had been clouded by the lack of civility and professional management in the board.  So our decision focused on who could be strong enough to influence a change in board behavior yet experienced enough to lower the level of contention on the board.

We recommend that Clay Pearce be supported for the board seat at the Canyons School district.  Clay has 25 years of experience in the education system.  He has taught, administered and is currently running programs for ‘at risk kids’.  He works in the Granite School District.  His wide array of experience would come in handy for any board member.  His temperament may be an asset for developing new board policy and management practices.  Whoever is elected will be dealing with a need to work well with the state.  We think Clay has those skills necessary to do the job.

This situation is interesting. The teachers got a paltry raise and two District Administrators get a twenty five thousand dollar bonus? There is something wrong with this deal. These raises should have never happened. I'll bet it is the first step in trying to implement Merit Pay in the Canyons District. This will be something to keep an eye on.

This article explains the attempts by a private business and a few misguided Legislators to privatize Utah's Schools. All of the people of this State, should be concerned about the activities these folks are engaged in, attempting to destroy our Public School System. Hopefully, with the influx of more moderate Delegates into the political system, these guys will be put on a short leash. This is shameful behavior on the part of this company and the Legislators involved in this mess.

This is the information, that I just posted to Salt Lake County's Online Voter Guide:

My name is Clay Pearce, and I'm running for the Canyons School Board. I have worked in education for twenty five years, as both a teacher and administrator in Granite School District. My experiences in these core positions has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to be an effective leader on the School Board.
The current issues confronting the Canyons District, raises concern about the well being of all the Stakeholders in the District. I will bring a strong Independent Voice to the School Board. I'm not entangled or beholden to the current power structure in the Canyons District.
I'm married to Sharla Green Pearce, and we have three children. My two youngest children are enrolled at Albion Middle School. My Campaign Agenda is as follows:

- Lobbying for the funds to retain quality teachers, counselors, administrators, and programs.
- Developing and offering a wide range of outstanding educational programs.
- Protecting the rights of teachers in having a voice in salary and personnel issues.
- To represent the entire Community in Precinct Three.

I talked to several teachers from the Canyons School District yesterday. The majority of them are very frustrated with the current direction of the District. They feel like their voices are not being heard on behalf of their students. This situation has made me want to work harder to get elected to the Board. Our teachers need someone on the Board who will listen and work to improve their work environment for both them and their students.

This is wonderful that these students are working on not being bullies. The Granite School District has a wonderful bullying program in place. The Program is called, "Don't Stand By, Be an Ally." It is so important that students feel safe in school.

Please click on this link for a recent news article by KSL, about important events in the Canyons District.

This situation in the Canyons School District is one of the main reasons I decided to run for the Canyons School Board. The climate of fear and intimidation is detrimental to the teachers, principals, and students in the District. I would bring a strong independent voice to the Board. I would work hard to eliminate these types of actions from taking place. I admire Kevin Cromar, Sharon Okumura, and Ellen Wallace for standing up to this type of intimidation.
